Chapter 7: Friendship
This story is not just about tennis or soccer or snacks. This story is about something even bigger and warmer. Friendship. What it is. Why it matters. How to find it. And what it means to have a best friend. Come sit by me, I will scoot over. There is always room.
The New Puppy At The Park
One sunny afternoon, Dad clipped on my leash and said, "Come on, Joy, we're going to the dog park!". My tail went into maximum wag mode.
At the park, dogs of all sizes ran and sniffed and barked. I saw a tiny brown puppy hiding behind a bench, shaking a little. Everyone else was chasing balls, but this puppy just watched. I trotted over slowly, making my steps extra gentle. I wagged my tail low and friendly. I gave a soft "Woof!", which in dog language means "Hi. I see you. Want to sniff?". After a moment, the puppy stepped closer. We sniffed noses. Our tails wagged at the same time. And just like that, a new connection sparkled in the air. And what was that? That was the beginning of a friendship.
What Is Friendship? (Joy's Understanding)
If I could talk in human words instead of barks, here is what I would tell Kai and Mia. Friendship is when two beings choose to care about each other, spend time together, and make each other feel safe, seen, and happy.
Friendship feels like someone running to you with a smile. Someone saving you a seat. Someone passing you the ball. Someone listening to your stories. Someone staying with you when you feel sad.
For dogs, friendship is sharing sticks. Taking turns chasing the ball. Playing tug-of-war, but not too rough. Lying in the shade together after an exhausting run chasing squirrels. Friendship is not just about fun. It is about feeling less alone in the world.
Why Is Friendship Important?
One day after school, Kai sat on the couch and started talking to Dad. Kai said, "Today was awesome. Winston helped me practice tennis during recess.". Mia came in later, smiling big. "Sarah passed the ball to me so I could score a goal! We did a silly victory dance after!". As everyone shared stories, they all laughed more and more. Their eyes looked shiny and bright. I curled up next to them and thought "Wow. Friends make my humans shine.".
Here is what I have noticed. When Kai and Mia have good days with friends, they smile more, worry less, feel braver, try new things. Bounce instead of drag their feet. So if a dog had to explain it, friendship is important because it makes life warmer, safer, funnier, and braver.
Friends cheer you on when you are trying. Sit with you when you are sad. Remind you that you matter. Make even ordinary days feel special. Without friends, the world can feel big and cold. With friends, the world feels like a cozy, waggy backyard.
How Do We Find Good Friends?
A few weeks later, I watched this happen. Kai was at the playground. A kid was standing alone by the fence, kicking a pebble. Kai looked over, then at his tennis ball, then back at the kid. Kai walked over and said, "Hey, want to play catch? I've got a pretty good arm.". The kid's face lit up and said, "Really?". They started tossing the ball back and forth, laughing when the ball went a little wild into the bushes.
I watched from under a tree and thought, "That. That is how friendship begins.". Here is what I have learned from watching humans and dogs.
Joy's Tips For Finding Good Friends
Be brave enough to say "Hi.". Friendships often start with one tiny word. Look for kindness. Good friends share, they do not make fun of you. They say sorry when they are wrong. They try to help, not hurt.
Be curious, not judgmental. Ask questions like, "What games do you like?", "What's your favorite snack?", "Want to play with us?".
Notice how you feel around them. Do you feel safe? Relaxed? Happy being yourself? That is a good sign.
Be a good friend yourself. Share your toys, your time, your laughs, and your listening ears. Good friends are like good dogs, you do not just find them, you also become one.
What Does A Good Friend Look Like?
Try not to look the outside, but the inside. I have seen lots of kids at the park and at school. Some are loud, some are quiet. Some run fast, some like to sit and read. But the best friends, the really good ones, have these qualities:
🐾 They listen when you talk.
🐾 They include you in games.
🐾 They do not laugh at your mistakes in a mean way.
🐾 They say sorry when they hurt you.
🐾 They celebrate your wins, even if they did not win too.
If someone is only nice when they get what they want, that is not a real friend. That is more like a person who just stays around you just to get extra snacks.
Real friends show up even when you kicked the soccer ball and missed the goal. You lost the tennis match. Your art drawing did not win a prize. Your day just was not that great. To me, a good friend smells like trust. Yes, I can smell trust. I am a dog. We are built different than humans.
What Is A Best Friend?
One evening, Mia was lying on the rug, talking to Mom. Mia said, "I have lots of friends at school, but Sarah is my best friend.". Dad asked, "What makes Sarah your best friend?". Mia thought for a moment and said, "She understands me. I can tell her anything. We always stick up for each other.". I wagged my tail and thought, "Ohhh. That is what humans mean by best friend!".
So here is Joy's definition of a best friend:
🐾 A best friend is a special friend you feel extra close to, someone you trust deeply, who makes you feel safe, seen, and loved just as you are.
🐾 A best friend is usually the first person you want to tell when something happens.
🐾 The one who knows your silly secrets.
🐾 The one who still likes you on your grumpy days.
🐾 The one who stays when things are not perfect.
🐾 A best friend does not have to be perfect. They just have to be honest, kind, and willing to grow with you.
For me? Kai and Mia are my best friends. I love Mom and Dad so much, but Kai and Mia sneak me crumbs of food. Hug me when they are happy. Cuddle me when they are sad. Talk to me like I understand every word, and honestly, I do, mostly, but I know more by looking at the expressions on their face.
When Friendships Get Hard
Sometimes, even good friends have hard days. I have seen it. Someone says something mean. Someone does not share. Someone leaves someone out.
One day, Mia came home with her eyebrows squished together. "What's wrong?", Mom asked. "Sarah played soccer with other kids and didn't pass to me.", Mia said. "I felt left out.". Mia looked at me. I scooted closer so her hand could find my head. Friendship is not always easy.
Sometimes feelings get hurt. Misunderstandings happen. People make mistakes. But here is what I have seen the best friendships do:
🐾 Talk it out, "It hurt my feelings when...", "I felt left out when...".
🐾 Listen for real not just waiting to talk again, actually listening.
🐾 Say sorry and mean it, "I'm really sorry. I'll try to do better.".
🐾 Forgive when you can. Everyone makes mistakes. Even the nicest human. Even the fluffiest dog.
Healthy friendships grow stronger after solving problems together, like a tree whose roots dig deeper over time so the tree will survive a storm.
How To Be A Good Friend
If dogs could write posters for classrooms, mine would say:
🐾 Be kind on purpose. Do not wait for a reason. Just be kind always.
🐾 Share toys, time, space, treats. Okay, maybe not all the treats.
🐾 Include others. If you see someone alone, invite them in.
🐾 Listen. Sometimes people do not need advice, they just need ears. I have two very good ears.
🐾 Do not make fun of what someone loves, even if it seems silly to you.
🐾 Stick up for your friends. If someone is being mean to them, say, "That's not okay.".
🐾 Let friends be themselves. You do not need them to be just like you to love them.
That is how you build friendships that last longer than tennis balls. And trust me, tennis balls last a long time in this house.
Joy's Big Friendship Secret
At the end of the day, when the house is quiet, I like to flop in the hallway where I can see both Kai's room and Mia's room. I listen to them breathe as they fall asleep. I think about the friends they have now. The friends they will meet someday. The hearts they will touch along the way.
And I make a quiet dog promise, "I will always be their friend. Their first hello in the morning, their soft comfort at night, their forever wagging companion.".
Here is my secret. You do not need many friends to have a full heart. You just need a few true ones. And you? You can be that true friend for someone else.
