Chapter 3:  Happiness

Today's story is not about tennis or soccer or squirrels. This story is about Happiness. What it is. How to find it. And how I, Joy the dog, stay happy all the time, even when it rains, even when the treat jar is empty, even when Mia scolds me for licking her so much.

Ready? Okay. Sit. Stay. Wag. Let us begin.

Morning Happy

Every morning I wake up before the sun. You might think, "Joy, why do you get up so early?". Easy answer, I cannot wait to be happy again. I stretch my paws. I shake my fur. I get out of my cage that is always open, that has a fluffy bed, and I go trotting through the house.

Kai is usually still snoozing. Mia is usually tangled up in her blankets with one leg drooped over the bed. But even though nobody is awake yet, I am happy. Why? Because happiness does not wait for something exciting to happen. Happiness starts the moment you decide to wag. Dogs know this. Humans sometimes forget.

Breakfast Joy

When the kids wake up, we gather in the kitchen where the food magic happens. Kai gets his toast. Mia gets her cereal. I get the same canned dog food. But I do not mind! To me, breakfast is not about what I eat. It is about the pack family I am with.

I sit beside Kai's chair. He gives me a crumb. I eagerly eat it, I do love human food. Mia giggles. I wag harder. Happiness lives in little moments. Tiny sprinkles of joy that fall all over your day if you pay attention.

Kai's Happiness Ball

After school, Kai runs outside to practice tennis. He grabs his racket and mutters things like, "Got to work on my backhand.". And I, Joy the Retriever, become Joy the Ball-Chasing, Speed-Rocket, Super-Dog-Champion of the world. I do not know all the tennis rules, but here is what I do know. When Kai hits a tennis ball, it becomes a Happiness Ball. Why? Because he is smiling. Because he is trying his best. Because he is doing something he loves.

That is happiness rule #1. Do more things that make your heart wag.

Mia's Soccer Adventures

Mia kicks her soccer ball everywhere. In the yard, down the sidewalk, even in the hallway, where she is not supposed to, but I do not tell her parents. She dribbles. She dodges. She laughs. And I chase her with my tongue hanging out like a tiny pink flag. Mia is not perfect at soccer yet. She falls sometimes. She misses the ball. She gets grass in her hair. But she is still happy.

That is happiness rule #2. You do not have to be perfect to be happy. You just have to be brave enough to try.

The Happiness Secret (Joy's Understanding)

Okay. Lean in close. Even closer. Nose touching close. I have a secret. Ready?

Dogs stay happy because we do not think about the past. We do not worry about the future. We just live right now. If right now is warm. If right now smells like bacon frying. If right now someone scratches behind my ears. That is enough. Humans can do this too.

That is happiness rule #3. Be where your paws are present. Life feels much brighter right now, exactly where I am standing.

Joy's Cloudy-Day Happiness

One day it rained for hours. No walks. No being let out in the backyard. No tennis. No soccer. Just gray, soggy puddles. Kai sighed. Mia flopped on the couch like she is bored.

But me? I carried my favorite squeaky toy to each of them in my mouth. I put my head on their lap. And wagged. Why? Because I would not let the weather control my heart. Rain outside does not mean rain inside.

So I invented a new game called "Squeaky Toy Tug War". I tease them by shaking the toy that I have in my mouth and they try to grab it from me. Kai and Mia laughed. Suddenly the whole room felt sunny.

That is happiness rule #4. When the world is gloomy, create your own sunshine.

The Art Of Tail Wagging

Some humans think wagging is just something dogs do. No. It is an art.  Here is how it is done. If I am thankful I wag slow. If I am excited I wag fast. If I am super excited I wag my whole butt, not just my tail. Humans cannot wag tails, but they can wag hearts or butts.

Smile. Say thank you. Share kindness. Give hugs. Cheer someone on. Each of those acts are a human version of tail-wagging.

That is happiness rule #5. Give joy to others, and joy returns to you. I think that is why I was named Joy by their parents because I live up to my name.

The Nighttime Snuggle Magic

At the end of each day, Kai reads books in his room. Mia curls under her sparkly blankets. And I go from room to room, visiting both of them before bedtime. I do one last stretch. One last yawn. One last soft tail thump against the floor. Because no matter what happened that day, I am happy I got to live it with them. And I am surrounded by my pack family love. Big, warm, love, peanut-buttery, maple-tree surrounding companions, every single moment of my life.

That is happiness rule #6. And maybe the most important one. Happiness grows wherever love is.

How Joy Stays Happy

When I socialize with other dogs in the dog park, dogs always ask me "How are you always so happy?". And I tell other dogs I meet:

🐾 I look for good things, even tiny ones.

🐾 I do not compare myself to other dogs.

🐾 I forgive quickly, even when a human accidentally steps on my paw and I yelp because it is painful.

🐾 I love my humans with my whole heart, every day.

🐾 I find adventure in the ordinary.

🐾 I treat each morning like a brand new toy I get to unwrap.

And the biggest one, happiness is not something I find, it is something I choose. I choose happiness every day. And you can too!
